System Sizing

When choosing a heat pump hot water system, sizing is key to comfort and efficiency. The size of the tank determines how much hot water is available at any one time, as well as how long it takes to reheat.

  • A 250L tank provides roughly 45 minutes of continuous hot water, suitable for smaller households or moderate use.

  • A 330L tank extends that to around 1hour, better suited for families or higher daily demand.

  • Recovery time: the period needed to reheat the tank after use. Typically ranges from 4 to 6 hours, depending on the season and water temperature.

For larger families or heavy users, hot water generated electrically can drain relatively quickly. In this situation, a larger storage tank or a high-capacity model such as the Sanden heat pump can ensure consistent performance and faster recovery times.

System Compliance

For safety, all heat pump systems are fitted with tempering valves that limit outlet water temperature to 55°C, preventing scalding. Homeowners may notice slightly cooler water compared to older systems without this feature, but this is an intentional and important safety measure.

Outdoor units must comply with EPA noise regulations, which limit noise to a maximum of 35 dB at the property boundary after 7 pm. Depending on where your system is placed, noise may carry to neighbouring homes. The ideal location is typically along a backyard wall facing away from your bedroom and your neighbours’ bedrooms, helping to minimise disturbance. It’s always a good idea to communicate with neighbours about potential noise before installation.

In addition to noise compliance, heat pumps must be installed in locations that don’t obstruct access areas and meet clearance requirements for nearby windows and doors.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

Frozen Pipes
During extreme cold snaps, incoming water pipes can freeze and block water flow. If this occurs, follow our guide on managing frozen water pipes in winter to safely restore operation.

Error Codes
If your system displays an error code, it is most often covered under warranty. Simply raise a support ticket with SolarHub so our team can assist with diagnosing and repairing the issue.

No Water Flow from a Tap
If a tap stops working and there’s no indication of freezing conditions, old plumbing solder may have blocked the system filter. This requires a licensed plumber to inspect and clear the blockage.

No Hot Water During Initial Testing
If your system produces no hot water from the start, it’s likely due to an installation fault. Please contact SolarHub and raise a support ticket for assistance.

Backup Operation
In the event of a system fault, most heat pumps can be switched to electric mode, ensuring continued access to hot water until the issue is resolved.

If you have any additional enquiries or encounter issues with your system, contact us by raising a Support Ticket and we can investigate the issues further.
