Reason for Recall
The recall was instated due to safety concerns with certain LG home energy storage batteries overheating or catching fire, posing a risk of injury, death, or property damage. The affected batteries contain cells with electrodes manufactured between:
- 21 January 2016 and 28 March 2017
- 14 September 2018 and 30 June 2019.
In December 2020, LG began recalling a specific group of these batteries in the US after reports of fires and property damage. LG Energy Solution Australia first announced a safety recall on 24 February 2021, later expanding it in August 2021 (PRA2020/18529) to include additional models. In November 2022, a new “Diagnostic Software Recall” (PRA2022/19550) was notified to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), extending the recall to ESS Home Batteries equipped with cells manufactured during the affected production periods.
You can check whether your LG home battery is affected by the recall by entering its serial number at LG’s official recall page.

After making modifications to their design and ensuring that these issues wouldn't continue to occur, LG have issued replacement batteries for the recalls. While these newer batteries no longer have an overheating risk, they have shown to pose potential faults.
Ongoing Challenges
Despite significant progress in the recall process, many affected LG Chem batteries remain in use. Across both recalls, an estimated 10,209 batteries were identified as defective. While most have been replaced or repaired, around 2,000 units are still operating and pose potential safety risks. Even after replacements and design improvements, further issues have emerged over time, including battery swelling. This ongoing problem has led to additional warranty claims of some LG Chem battery models. If you notice swelling on your LG Chem battery, please contact SolarHub.
